Legal Aid attorneys collaborate with CFI clinicians to ensure that school-age patients receive appropriate educational support, including special education services and assistance with school discipline issues. Attorneys meet with parents on-site at Mount Sinai’s CFI office to provide legal advice and/or representation on education issues.
Students with unaddressed learning, developmental, and/or social-emotional needs that negatively affect school functioning are at high risk of poor life outcomes, including eventual justice system involvement. Through legal advocacy, parent and clinician training, parent support groups, and extensive case consultations, our work helps students succeed in school and avoid entering the school to prison pipeline. Funding is provided by the District Attorney of New York’s Criminal Justice Investment Initiative.
